Elsie's Second Birthday

I’m back! More on my blogging hiatus later – maybe.

WARNING: this is long. and sad.

Elsie’s second birthday was, to date, the absolute worst day of my life. I spent the day trying to be happy and celebrate the life of my baby, all while being completely devastated over the loss of another baby. Our beloved dog B, aka Big Mama, went to doggie heaven Tuesday night – it was completely unexpected and all too sudden.

People are asking what happened, and I can’t talk about it. I just can’t. So I’ll tell everyone on here instead.

B and I went full circle in our relationship. I loved her from the day I met her. In Kennesaw, I often got long lunch breaks and I would spend them at Ben’s house, napping with B. We were the best of buddies until shortly after Elsie’s birth. She had a hard time adjusting, and developed a mass cell tumor on her ear. She wouldn't listen, she acted out, she had accidents in the house, and she was pretty much unbearable. We've since learned that the tumor most likely released toxins into her body, which is what caused her to be so crazy.  In turn, I was crazy too. Hormonal exhausted Momma and a naughty dog – I wanted her gone. It took a while to save the money for the procedure, and during that time I did a lot of complaining about B. I didn't make it easy on Ben at all.

We finally got her all fixed up, and she settled into her new role as big sister – she became another Momma to Elsie, so much so we started calling her Big Mama. We were best friends again.  We even worked out our sleeping arrangement which meant Ben, most often, spent the night in the guest bed to accommodate B and I snuggling in our bed. I’m so thankful we made up and got back to normal. Better than normal. B loved me more than anyone in the house, and she was crazy protective of Mom and little sister. I can’t put into words how happy I am that our relationship came around and was better than ever. I know the big sister transition was hard on her and I truly did everything in my power to make sure she knew she was loved. I’m so glad I did. I now realize just how much of my day I spent giving her attention and loving on her.

Everything was perfect with B until shortly after Christmas. I noticed blood in her urine. Thank God for snow, I would've never known anything was wrong. She spent 4 weeks on antibiotics for a bladder infection. Everything was good again. Until around this time last week. I noticed she was a little mopey and lazy, and I thought she just needed a little extra loving, which I gladly gave her. I also thought maybe she was just cooped up, we all are. It’s a long winter. Monday morning I noticed more blood. Tuesday morning I dropped her off at the vet with the assumption we would send off a urine sample to determine the correct meds. She spent all day at the vet, and they found that the problem most likely wasn't her bladder.

Around 6:00 I went in to talk with the vet about what she’d found.  It may be cancer. She wanted to do a full ultrasound so get a better look, and said we would have to come back around 8 to transport B to the emergency clinic for the night. Then, we’d get test results in the morning and determine a course of action. B had started bleeding internally; it’s most likely that during the exams something ruptured that caused the bleeding. We had hopes it would fix itself. Best case it wasn't cancer and there was a surgical procedure that could get her fixed up in the morning.

We went to hang out at Ben’s parents’ house and wait. They were nice enough to help with Elsie so we could go back and transport her to the ER vet alone. There, I got a call from the vet. The ultrasound showed a lot of masses and fluid, I mean a lot. So much so that she couldn't even find B’s kidneys. There’s no way this wasn't cancer. It had rapidly spread and taken over all her insides. With the cancer alone, she would've had a few more days or weeks to live. However, the internal bleeding has worsened and B was very weak and pale. Most likely, she wouldn't have lived through the night. The whole way to the vet Ben and I both knew what we’d have to do, but didn't say it out loud.

When we got there, the vet carried B into the room and she was happy to see us, but she was so weak and pale that she just wasn't there. After seeing her, I know for certain she wouldn't have made it through the night. My heart completely shattered as Ben and I loved on her and said our goodbyes. We made our decision; B had to go to doggie heaven that night. I gave Ben a minute alone with her and talked to the vet. She then agreed that B wouldn't have made it over night. I think she just didn't want to influence our decision. Saying goodbye to B was the hardest thing I've ever done. We love her so dearly, and like all our animals she’s a child to us. I know in my heart she knew what was happening, and she knew it was her time. She couldn't have gone out in a more peaceful way. She was in my lap with her head on my chest, frequent snuggle position and her favorite place to be, while Ben and I pet her and told her we loved her. She went with love and dignity and I know for certain we did what was best for her. I can’t imagine the pain she’d been in. Just a few days before she was playing fetch with Elsie in the house. It must’ve taken a lot of strength for her to play with her baby sister, but I know she wouldn't have had it any other way.

It’s been so hard. I didn't sleep at all that night. I’m used to having her in the bed with me. The next day, Elsie’s birthday, was very emotional. Letting out one dog instead of two, seeing two dog bowls, her empty spot on the couch, trying to take a nap in an empty bed, and the quiet, quiet house – it was just too much. I cried all day. Then Ben got home and we cried together, more than once. I cried this morning when Elsie and I got home from school. Coming home is hard – she always greets us at the door, tail wagging, and so excited I can barely get into the house. For now, I think I am out of tears. Needless to say, a big piece of our family is gone. I’m so happy she had such a good life, she was loved. We already miss her terribly.

So...with all that’s happened, I don’t think Elsie had a great birthday. Her best friend is gone. No cake. No ice cream. No present, even. Ben and I were going to go pick up one together and everything with B happened instead. Thank God she’s only two, and she doesn't know her birthday from the 4th of July. We are having a birthday re-do on Monday, Ben is taking off work and we will spend the day doing something fun and celebrating our girl. My “birthday redo” post will be much happier, I promise!

 To Big Mama, thank you.

til next time,

2.5 Months in Pictures

I can't believe it's been so long since I've posted anything! A quick little update before mega-photo overload.

Around 2 months old (April) I got Elsie on a pretty strict schedule and at about 2 1/2 months she started sleeping through the night. She sleeps 8-10 hours at night. I've been very much enjoying finally getting to sleep. I'm sleeping instead of blogging. or cleaning. or doing laundry. I've slept more in the past 2 months than I did the entire time (cumulative) I was pregnant. Now that I'm finally able to sleep - I am! A lot! I'm loving it! I've almost forgotten about the God awful insomnia I had for 9 months.

I think I'm finally getting back into my old routines and getting rid of some of this baby weight- only ten pounds to go!! It feels like these last 10 are never gonna go away. Who ever said nursing makes it just "melt away" is full of crap. It doesn't. Its just nursing propaganda. By the time you figure out it's a big fat freakin' lie, it's too late. You've gotten the hang of it. You've bought a $300 pump. It's too late. You're committed. But, I'd do it anyway, so whatever.

Anywho! In keeping with true Wood family fashion, we've been keeping pretty busy! Here's what we've been up to the past few months!

loves napping on Daddy

I'm not lying, she always wakes up this happy

We went to GA in early May for a long weekend:

We celebrated my first Mothers Day:

All ready for bed after a perfect day, Daddy and Elsie went all out :)

Elsie started rolling over:
Her 'look what I did' face!

her excited face

Elsie got her 4 month shots
And as usual - Daddy was there fix it! I can.not handle it, he has to do the dirty work. She started out tall and skinny, then was normal, and is now short and skinny. Next time she'll prob be tall and chunky! But for now, she's a teenie weenie..4.5 months old now and still drowning in her 0-3 nightgowns. So...everyone who bought us gowns - thanks! We've gotten your money's worth out of them.

As of her 4month appointment:
13 lbs, 5oz (32%)
23 3/4 inches (22%)
sweet Daddy...Mommy can't handle that awful cry

We celebrated Ben's first Fathers Day!
There aren't enough days in the year to celebrate how wonderful he is, he is too good to us!

ready to kill some weeds
Elsie, Ben's mom and I went to Ohio so Elsie could meet Ben's grandmother. We had a great time and Elsie loved her great-Grandma Clo! She doesn't like to be held by anyone other than me and Ben, but went straight to Clo like she sees her everyday.

This blanket was laid out perfectly on the floor for her to play on

And exactly why we don't put them on her while she's sleeping

Daddy missed her so much he bought her a monkey. which she loves.

We celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary

Ben and I have been married for 2 years! I can't even describe how incredible these last 2 years have been. They've flown by. When we got married, he promised to give me everything I've ever wanted, and he's done that and then some! I'm still not sure how I managed to get so lucky.

Yesterday we just got back from a little weekend getaway to Chippewa Falls, WI to celebrate our anniversary. The Wood family likes to celebrate, can ya tell? We had a great time, and Wisconsin is surprisingly beautiful. It's crazy that there's gorgeous rolling hills just one state away from flat Minnesota.

Elsie was a little difficult for the car ride there, but she had an episode with her crib and I think it just ruined her mood for the day. Understandably. Let's just say I'm pretty sure she'll never.ever.ever want to sleep in it. Other than that, she was a perfect traveler the entire time - she fits right in! She's so exhausted today. She went to bed last night at 9:30, woke up at 7 and 9 this morning to eat, and has been asleep all day (it's 1pm). Have I mentioned how much I love my little sleepy head??

Excited about our trip!

This place was so beautiful we went twice
so relaxing. Wineries are our new favorite thing.
Leinenkugel Brewing Company

over 100 years old

Can I just say - when I worked at SweetWater, I always silently judged all the parents there with kids and babies. Now, I'm that parent. at a brewery. with a baby. sampling beers. I had maybe 12oz of beer in 3 hours, I bet those other parents probably only had ab that much too. I kinda feel bad for thinking they shouldn't of been there. oops!

ready for her first dip in the pool

one last glass

Other randoms lately:

 yum toes

seriously, she can fit all of them in her mouth

Can you tell why I haven't posted anything lately? I think we like to keep pretty busy in the summer to make up for the long winters of doing nothing. Even though this past winter was awesome. Gotta enjoy the nice weather while its here, right? This weekend my Dad is coming in town to go fishing with Ben so we're pretty excited about getting him out on the river. We need to find her a lifejacket that will fit, so if anyone has any ideas let me know! I'm hoping I can find something bc I really want to go!

I promise to post more often! I'm sure the 5 family members that actually read this are dying to know more about what's going on with us. HA! This long post is so imperfect it's driving me nuts, I wanted to add ab 50 more pictures but for some reason my blogger is messing up and posting pictures in the wrong places - in the middle of the post, in the beginning, etc...so if anyone knows why...HELP!

Happy 4th of July!

Where Do I Begin?

I don't even know where to start??

Elsie's 2 month appointment was on Friday - she is now 11.3 lbs and 22.5 inches. It looks like her weight has finally caught up to her height :) The Dr said "wow, I'd say she looks like a little more than 11lbs." HAHA! She got several shots, and lets just say she didn't like it one bit. Ben held her down while they did it, and then got to calm her down after. I was not the right person for that job. It was awful.

Daddy fix it :(

She was a good little snuggler after her shots, the Moby came in handy
p.s. doesn't she kinda look like a baby doll here??

The appointment, other than the shots, went well. She is lifting her head on her own - she's been doing that since she was 2 wks old, following me across the room, cooing a lot, smiling, making faces..she loves to stick her tongue out! She's so happy, even in the middle of the night she's smiling. I'll feed her & put her back down and she'll just lie there and smile at herself til she falls back to sleep. She really is such an easy baby! Except when Ben was out of town she went a little no nap crazy on me....we were both really happy when he got home. One more Canada trip this week and it should be a few months before he has to go out of town again. And it's only for a few days, thank goodness.
The day Ben got home, she was happy to see him :)
Our Easter Bunny trip went well, too. She wasn't really thrilled to see him because we took away her paci and woke her up from her nap. But, she looked gorgeous in her little dress :) We took her to get some photos made in the mall while we were there and they turned out really cute, too.
Ben absolutely melted for her in this dress...
I was under strict instructions to make sure she had a matching hair bow :)
One day she'll probably hate me for posting this picture, but it's just too funny. We woke her up from her nap to take her somewhere and she was not too happy about it! Look at this face!!! HAHAHA (she was back asleep in 5 minutes)
I was asleep...now I'm in the stupid carseat. How did this happen?!!?
We have a trip for GA planned for next month and I can't wait to finally show her off to our GA friends & family, a much needed little mini vacation! We're all so excited!!

My Little Chunker

Ben weighed Elsie today.....12 POUNDS!!!!

It may be a little off depending on the scale and she wasn't nakey like she has to be at the Dr. Her 2 month appt is next Friday, I can't wait to see how big my little chunker is. I have a feeling she's no longer tall and skinny :) I am making Ben go with me, I just don't think I can handle shots alone.

She is becoming a little person so fast. All of a sudden she became a little flirt! She smiles all day - when she is awake, sleeping, playing, even while eating she'll take a little break to smile for a little bit. She is such an easy, happy baby so far. Last night at 4am she woke up to eat and then was in the mood to play for a minute. She got all smiley and then giggled!! She's been trying and last night the sounds finally came out. It sounded more like a gasp for air but it was definitely a giggle. Such a cute little sound!

Speaking of Dr appointments - I had my checkup today. I have been given permission to start easing back into working out, and I am sooo excited. For now I guess it's just walking and yoga, but it's only a matter of time before I'm back at spin class and I can't wait. Last week I weighed myself at Bed Bath & Beyond and it wasn't pretty. Apparently that scale was broken bc I got a better result. I've lost 20lbs since I had her, and 7 since the day I left the hospital. I read that I shouldn't be losing more than a pound a week so I'm pretty happy with that. My sister and I are going to do Weight Watchers. I'm starting Monday - I wanted to wait for this appt and Easter to get out of the way. I am ohhhh SOOOO excited about getting back into my gym routine. Even better, my sister in law works at the daycare in the gym so I don't even have to worry about leaving Elsie with a stranger. I think she'll be in pretty good hands :)

Chunky Monkey - lying on the floor talking to her blinky kitty
(her play gym has a cat that lights up and plays music...she's a big fan)
